Greenpeace: Feds too cozy with big oil

Greenpeace is accusing the federal government of being too close to the oil industry.

The group says it has information that Shell Canada and the federal government partnered to lobby against rules in California and Europe that would’ve hurt oil sands marketing.

Spokesman Keith Stewart says that’s a problem.

“What we’re concerned about is that our federal government seems to believe that what’s good for oil companies like Shell is what’s good for Canada,” he said. “And we think there’s actually a difference; and we need to have our governments looking at the long-term interests of Canadians and not just the oil companies.”

Greenpeace says the feds’ stance will make it harder for Canada to be part of a green energy revolution.

“Canada could be a green leader; we should be a green leader; and if we don’t, we’re actually risking the prosperity of our kids and undermining the environment we all depend on,” Stewart added.

He says the group is hoping provincial premiers raise concerns about it at their meeting in Halifax this week.
