Health minister Fred Horne says he’s angry about the spending scandal that has led to 2 resignations in AHS.
It started after the CBC revealed CFO Allaudin Merali spent almost 350 thousand dollars of tax money on fancy dinners and other luxuries.
“I don’t want there to be any doubt whatsoever that I am outraged by what has been revealed here,” Horne said.
AHS board president Sheila Weatherill also quit her post; she was the one who signed off on the claims.
Horne says it was the right move.
“In our discussions, she indicated to me that she felt that the reputation of Alberta Health Services, and even more importantly public confidence in our health care system, was the most important thing at the present time,” Horne said.
Merali could receive more than 400 thousand dollars in severance despite being canned.
