Hit-and-run victim identified

Friends and family are identifying the victim of a fatal hit-and-run in downtown Fort McMurray.

At about 2 a.m. on Saturday, 46-year-old Albert Mercredi was crossing the street on Franklin Avenue, outside of the 711.

Wood Buffalo RCMP arrested 28-year-old Gaetan Cartier of Fort McMurray for a allegedly hitting Mercredi with his car.

The victim was taken to an Edmonton hospital where he later died.

A witness helped police find the suspect. Cartier was charged with Failing to stop or remain at the scene of an accident involving an injured person, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and Criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

His first court appearance was yesterday.
