Huskies endowment hits $375k

Keyano College says its athletic endowment fund has hit the $375,000 mark.

That’s just two years into the five year fundraising campaign that had a goal of $500,000.

Athletic director Wade Kolmel says it sends a clear message.

“We’re positioned well to succeed for a long time,” he said. “It’s a nice measure of sustainability; we’re all expected to be stewards, and to make sure the program’s better off tomorrow than it is today, and you accomplish that with a strong endowment fund.”

Kolmel says athletic awards will be a big help in recruiting.

“You have to pull out all the stops,” he said of attracting students to Fort McMurray. “You have to talk about everything from academics, teachers, living conditions, uniforms, travel plans, to special services like physiotherapy.”

He also says the Huskies brand is getting around the region.

“They were in Janvier on Wednesday, in Anzac the other day, they’ve been in Conklin, they’ve been to almost every school in Fort McMurray,” he said. “Pretty much, you walk into most elementary schools, and you’ll see some time of picture on a mural of a Huskies athlete engaging with what I hope is a future Huskies athlete somewhere down the road.”

The College says once it hits its 500 thousand dollar goal, the fund will provide $25,000 of athletic awards every single year.
