Industry and province respond to DiCaprio visit

Companies are tired of celebrity environmentalists coming to Wood Buffalo to offer ways to develop the oilsands. That’s according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, which made the remarks during an interview with the Globe and Mail.

CAPP was responding to actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s trip to Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan last week. He was in the region doing research for an upcoming environmental documentary.

Alberta’s energy ministry also spoke to the paper about the visit. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Minister Diana McQueen says reasonable people know the world needs all types of energy, including fossil fuels.

The trip comes the same week of the release of the short film Carbon. As the narrator, DiCaprio calls the resource an ancient menace. He says it needs to stay in the ground and he argues for the use of alternative energy.
