Integrated Traffic Unit has busy weekend on local highways

The RCMP’s provincial traffic unit had its hands full on Highway 63 this past weekend.

Between Highways 63, 69, and 811, it laid 646 charges between Friday and Monday, with 15 of those coming from vehicles going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.

As well, the unit says major arrests it made were spread out over the weekend.

On Friday, a 30-year-old man was stopped on 63 near King Street, going 142 in a 70 zone.

Police found he was driving while suspended for a second time.

His vehicle is being seized for 60 days, along with possible jail time for the driver.

On Saturday, police caught a 25-year-old driver going 196 on Highway 63, heading to Fort McMurray.

Police say when stopped, he explained he wanted to pass the driver beside him.

He’s been given a court appearance, as well as had his driver’s license suspended.

Also on Saturday, police stopped a delivery van driving 131, about 100 km south of town.

Police found the 30-year-old behind the wheel had two outstanding Canada-wide driving prohibitions to his name.

He was charged with speeding, two counts of driving while unauthorized, fraudulently obtaining an American driver’s licence, and breaching a probation order.

He’ll be in court facing jail time in July, and had his employer’s van seized for 30 days.

Sunday, police stopped a Ford Focus going 157 on 63, south of town.

A half hour later, the same driver was stopped going 169, both times in a 100 zone.

The 30-year-old was charged twice and given two separate court appearances, where he faces fines and license suspension.

According to police, the driver explained his speeding to officers by citing safety, saying he wanted to reach Edmonton before dark.

And on Monday, another driver was given a court order after being caught going 164 north of town.

As well, a 23-year-0ld driver was stopped for going 35 km over the limit in a construction zone, about 130 km south of town.
