Irving Oil head says refineries shouldn't be in Alberta

The head of Irving Oil says new upgraders for oil sands crude should be built outside of Alberta.

Company president Mike Ashar told Bloomberg that new refineries should be on the coasts, where labour costs are cheaper and the equipment doesn’t have to be transported over land.

He says Alberta needs to focus on getting workers for production, where there’s already a shortage.

Irving Oil runs the country’s largest refinery, in Saint John New Brunswick.

It’s backing a plan to get oil sands crude shipped out east for processing.
