Joint panel established for major Shell expansions

Shell is getting closer to a major expansion of its oil sands operations.

The federal and provincial governments have announced they’re forming a joint panel to review two proposals from the company.

The first is for its new 200 thousand barrel per day Pierre River project, which will be an open pit mine 20 kilometres north of the Jackpine project.

The second is a 100 thousand b-p-d expansion of Jackpine, 70 kilometres north of the city.

The review will be opening up for public comments within the next two weeks.
