Kathy Bates has battled cancer for the second time.
The actress, 64, who opened up in March about surviving ovarian cancer nine years ago, was diagnosed with breast cancer several weeks ago, she tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy,” the Academy Award-winning actress reveals. “Luckily, I don’t have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception.”
Bates, who won a Best Actress Oscar in 1991 for Misery, remains upbeat is now looking ahead to the future.
“My doctors have assured me I’m going to be around for a long time,” she says. “I’m looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do.”
One of the exciting things on her calendar is the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 23. Bates is nominated for outstanding actress in a drama for (Harry’s Law) and outstanding guest actress in a comedy for (Two and a Half Men).
