Keyano College to host 2016 Men's National Basketball Championship

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) announced yesterday that Keyano College has been awarded the 2016 Men’s Basketball National Championship.

Keyano is the Northernmost college among the CCAA’s 94 members.

“We are very excited to host the National Championship,” said Wade Kolmel, Keyano’s Director of Sport & Student Wellness. “Our men’s baseketball team attended the National Championship at John Abbott College in 2013 and from that point forward we have made every effort to present ourselves as potential hosts.”

This is the second announcement of a major sporting event to come to town in 2016 after it was announced that the Canada Cup of Baseball was awarded to Fort McMurray.

The National Championship will be hosted from Mar. 16-19, 2016.

Jan. 12, 2015 – The CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship is heading north.

Keyano College of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference has been awarded the event, to be hosted March 16-19, 2016. The bid was approved at the Winter Board Meeting in Ottawa today.

Fort McMurray last hosted a National CCAA event in 2009 when the Men’s volleyball championship came to town.

“Wood Buffalo is an emerging ‘Sport Tourism’ destination and the athletes/coaches involved in the 2016 National Championship will benefit from participating within a regional municipality that will be welcoming, hospitable and strongly resourced from a facility and amenity perspective,” said Kolmel.
