Supporters of the Arts and the Keyano College Theatre put on a convincing performance at council. Last night, it approved a $10 million capital grant to help with the planned theatre expansion.
“The balcony level will add approximately 600 seats, including two premium box seating locations. The third floor studio space has elevator access and large windows looking out onto King St.,” explained Director Alan Roberts.
The college says the expansion will double current capacity, and based on ticket sales, the theatre needs it.
“In our 2014-2015 season, we were pleased to host over 170 events, with an audience of over 34,000 patrons,” said Roberts.
The money comes out of funds saved during discretionary spending cuts in the first quarter. College officials pitched a $40 million project to the Audit and Budget committee last October. The designs also include an art gallery, multi-use exhibit space and lobby with a gallery and bar.
