Laid off Kearl workers re-hired

The contractor who was accused of laying off more than 60 Canadian ironworkers and replacing them with Temporary Foreign Workers has backtracked.

The company says that it has re-hired the ironworkers who had been assigned to Imperial Oil’s Kearl project.

The Alberta Federation of Labour had accused the company of paying the workers’ Croatian replacements 50% of the wage of the original employees.

Pacer Promec says it will re-hire Canadians to jobs that were filled by TFWs.

It says foreigners should have only been put in projects that had labour shortages; but it was a subcontractor that brought them in and thought it was following the rules.
