Latest figures report decrease in Wood Buffalo homeless population

There’s fewer homeless people on the streets of Wood Buffalo, according to the latest numbers.

The Point-in-Time Homeless Count says there was a 10 per cent decrease of homeless people in Wood BUffalo between 2012 and 2014.

“We are pleased with the results of the count,” said Paulina O’Connor, Supervisor of Housing Initiatives, Neighbourhood and Community Development. “However it is important to note that the methodology between the 2014 Wood Buffalo PIT Homeless Count and previous years has varied slightly and that we still have to analyze the results in context of the broader economic trends impacting our region. We look forward to reviewing the full report.”

Of the 294 people in the region who were surveyed, 69 per cent say they were sleeping rough in places such as parks or on the streets. One per cent said they spend the night in a public system like a hospital or jail. Nineteen per cent were staying in an emergency shelter and 11 per cent were in a short term housing facility.
