Line painting causes huge night-time 63 backup

If you were stuck in the big traffic jam on northbound 63 last night; Alberta Transportation says it won’t make that mistake again.
It says the Athabasca River bridge was reduced to one lane northbound for line painting at about 8pm, but the contractor didn’t get them to send out a warning earlier that day.
Traffic was down to a standstill and it took upwards of half an hour to get from downtown to Thickwood.
The work ended up being suspended because of rain, and the lane wasn’t re-opened until around 11:45.
The province says it is its policy to send out an advisory for lane closures on 63, even though that’s not the case in the rest of the province, because of how vital an artery the highway is in Fort McMurray.
It says that line painting will mean a lane closure again tonight and possibly tomorrow night as well, depending on the weather.
