Loblaw and union reach tentative agreement; workers will stay on strike

UPDATE:

The Real Canadian Superstore’s parent company and a union that represents more than 8,000 of the stores workers have reached a tentative agreement after going on strike at 12:01 Sunday morning.

Loblaw and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 say union members will vote on the proposed agreement Tuesday but workers will stay off the job for now.

The Superstore’s will stay open, they’ll just be run by managers.

Leaders of Local 401 say they will recommend approval of the proposed contract.

Strike notice was given September 19th because of proposed changes to hours and wages.

Loblaw has reached tentative deals with unions in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

BACKGROUND:

The Real Canadian Superstore says it’s continuing to negotiate with a union to end a province-wide strike that started up this weekend.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 that represents more than 8,000 employees gave strike notice September 19th because of proposed changes to hours and wages.

Loblaws says it’s stores are still open- but staffed by managers.
