Local Tim Moen wins national leadership of Libertarian Party

For the first time ever, the region’s home to a party leader.

Tim Moen’s won the national leadership for the Libertarian Party.

He’s a firefighter, business owner and filmmaker and is running in the June by-election to be MP for the Fort McMurray-Athabasca riding.

The party says he entered the national race after speaking out against Neil Young’s comments comparing Fort McMurray to Hiroshima.

Moen says the party’s the only one that offers hope for people to take control back over their own lives and communities.

He says the party shakes the chains of status quo politics and brings power back to people.

Moen also made headlines after creating a meme saying, “I want gay married couples to be able to protect their marijuana plants with guns.”

The brief statement was meant to represent some of the most popular positions of Libertarianism.

It became a internet sensation and also made the front page of Reddit, the self-proclaimed, front page of the internet.

Moen takes over for Katrina Chowne who’s led the party since May 2011.
