Hear Macdonald Island Chief Operating Officer Tim Reid speak after last night’s vote:
Municipal council has unanimously approved the massive expansion at Macdonald Island Park.
The huge project should be completed by 2015; with renovations to the gym finishing by this fall.
The project will carry a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) to the city of 127 million dollars.
COO Tim Reid says that guarantee was probably the key to the project’s success.
“There’s a lot of scars around the Mac Island project that I think people still remember,” he said. “That being said, I think we’re celebrating the fact that there was a time where we had a vision, we took a risk, and it produced something that sees 2 million visitors a year. The GMP allows us to reduce that risk.”
Under the GMP, if the price goes over 127 million, the extra will be paid for by the contractors, not taxpayers.
Applause broke out at council last night after the plan passed.
Reid says there’s something in the new Mac Island for everyone.
“It has space that you can host a 24,000 person concert on it,” he said. “You could have Bon Jovi here in three years’ time, or somebody like that.”
“But then in the backdrop you have this great non-profit space, where you could have not-for-profits that are doign great things in our community in the background and being part of all that action.”
That’s in addition to a five thousand seat outdoor stadium and the new baseball field.
Reid says it’s a big league project.
“Our design team were the same guys that built the new Meadowlands for the [New York] Giants and the Jets,” he said. “They flip their facility every weekend to a new NFL team. So if they built a facility there that can do that, just think of the possibilities of what they’ve designed for us.”
“I think, really, the sky’s the limit.”
