Missing hunter found safe

A hunter is safe and unharmed after going missing for about 9 hours.

Trevor Simon, 31, was reported missing at about 6:20 last night. He was in a canoe on the Athabasca River, about 100 kilometres north of the city.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say he dropped a friend off on shore and they agreed to meet at a landing down river. But strong currents stopped him from getting to shore, and the RCMP’s Search and Rescue Teams were sent out on all-terrain vehicles to find the man.

Simon eventually made his way to an ATV trail and located some drivers. At about 3:30 this morning police got confirmation that Simon had been found safe.

“Although this search had a positive ending, police would like to remind the public not to engage in search efforts if not trained to do so, especially in a wilderness area,” says and RCMP statement. “Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to thank all who assisted in this search and its successful conclusion.

Simon got first aid by police on scene and he was brought to hospital as a precaution.
