More PetroChina execs investigated over oil sands deals

Four high-ranking executives with PetroChina are now being investigated over oil sands deals, according to the Financial Post.

This comes after the head of its subsidiary, Brion Energy, was arrested in Beijing last month.

Brion owes Athabasca Oil Corporation more than a billion dollars for Athabasca’s 40 percent share of the Dover SAGD oil sands project, but the payment hasn’t been completed.

The Chinese government’s investigation is focusing on several companies, and whether they paid too much for oil sands properties.

Athabasca and PetroChina started a five billion dollar joint venture in 2010 to develop both Dover and the MacKay River project.

PetroChina has already taken over MacKay River, where the Post reports there’ve already been cost overruns.
