The local wildfire office isn’t expecting the smoke in the area to clear up anytime soon.
Sustainable Resource Development says all the smoke is now coming from fires in High Level, in this district, in Wood Buffalo National Park, and in the Northwest Territories.
SRD raised the wildfire hazard rating this weekend to ‘very high’.
It’s reporting 12 wildfires in the region, but there are only a couple even remotely near the city.
One fire south of Fort Smith is being held at 7.5 hectares, and another nine kilometres west of the Kearl project is being held at twelve hectares.
There are five helicopters and 33 firefighters on those two fires.
