NDP won't change royalties program until 2017

The NDP government is launching a public consultation and review of how it collects oil and gas royalties from producers in Alberta that will run from September through the end of November.

They have promised to maintain the status quo until December 2016 which means companies operating in the petroleum industry won’t see a change until 2017.

The public consultation will form just part of a larger review set to run over the coming year that will assess the current system.

A panel has been created to run the review which will also cull perspective from experts who will review the current state of the petroleum industry.

Dave Mowat will chair the panel, joined by energy economist Peter Tertzakian, former Alberta deputy minister of finance Annette Trimbee, and Mayor of Beaverlodge Leona Hanson.

“Albertans deserve a royalty system they can trust. We have to get this review right, and doing it right means having an open, frank discussion about how our royalty system can better serve Albertans, industry and the good jobs industry creates for generations to come,” said Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, Minister of Energy.

Once the review is complete, the NDP will assess what changes – if any – need to be made to the royalties system.
