NDP leader Jack Layton has died after his battle with cancer. Layton announced that he had been diagnosed with a second form of cancer at the end of last month, but had said that his treatment for a previous diagnosis of prostate cancer had been going well.

In the last federal election, Layton led the New Democrats to take the role of the official opposition for the first time in party history. He was 61 years old.

The party says Layton died peacefully at 4:45 a.m. ET today at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Funeral details have not yet been announced.
