NDP to increase the minimum wage on October 1

The new NDP government is getting set to raise the minimum wage.

The wage increase is not defined but the existing formula was based on the consumer price index and average weekly earnings.

The government is throwing that out the door and will meet with stakeholders and hold consultations over the next month before reporting back to Albertans in July.

“Today our government is pleased to announce the next steps in our plan to raise the minimum wage for Alberta families,” said Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour.

Wage increases are expected to take effect on Oct. 1.
