Alberta has signed a carbon-capture deal aimed at producing electricity as part of the province’s $2-billion plan to reduce its carbon footprint.

Under the $285-million deal, Swan Hills Synfuels will drill into a coal seam 1.4 kilometres underground.

Heat and steam will be used to convert the coal to gas, which will be piped to the surface where the carbon dioxide will be removed.
