New fundraiser for locals battling cancer

Inner City Diesel is launching Karz for Cancer, a fundraiser to support people fighting for their lives as they battle cancer diagnoses.

Owner Eric Tevely said the inspiration for this fundraiser came after the outpouring of support for Bo Cooper’s cause shone a light on the fact that there are costs to fighting cancer outside of what is covered by healthcare and insurance.

“Obviously Bo’s not the only person in the region that is fighting for his life and it became more and more evident as the fight for Bo has gone on,” said Tevely.

“Bo still needs more money but there are more people that need money as well,” he said.

So, he’s launching this new, not-for-profit, initiative that will see Inner City Diesel take used cars, fix them up and sell them with all proceeds going to support local people diagnosed with cancer.

There are a couple of local kids involved in minor hockey, something Tevely is involved with, who are fighting for their lives as they battle cancer which has further spurred Tevely’s drive to raise money for this cause.

“That hits pretty close to home,” he said.

The funds raised will support those kids and other people in our community with the costs not covered by insurance or healthcare, like parking, travel and accommodation, time away from work for parents, counselling, physical therapy etc.

The disease affects almost everyone, either personally or by one degree removed.

“People can bring a scrap vehicle or an old beater that they don’t want in their driveway any more or just donate a vehicle that may be older and not used as much, to Karz for Cancer. We take it in, we fix it up and we sell it and all of the profits, every penny of the profit, will go back to the people in Fort McMurray that are fighting for their lives with cancer,” said Tevely.

He said people can simply call Inner City Diesel at 587-624-0828 and give them a description of a vehicle for donation. The staff will assess the vehicle and decide whether it’s fixable. If it is, Inner City Diesel will come and pick up the vehicle and transfer it into Karz for Cancer’s name.

When they are up for sale the cars will be available on the website for Karz for Cancer, which isn’t live yet, and on Kijiji.
