New oil sands project to use CN Rail

One of the newest oil sands projects won’t be using pipelines to get bitumen south.

Southern Pacific says it’s going to use CN Rail to transport crude from its STP-McKay thermal project, 45 kilometres northwest of the city.

That project will be producing about 12 thousand barrels per day when it starts up this year.

The company will truck it to Lynton, south of town, where it’ll ride the rails to Mississippi to be sent to Gulf Coast refineries.
