Nexen has been issued a suspension order by the Alberta Energy Regulator affecting the Long Lake oilsands operations in Anzac.

The order requires Nexen to suspend 15 pipeline licences, which means stopping operations on 95 pipelines that are carrying natural gas, crude oil, salt water, fresh water, and emulsion.

Nexen must also provide proof to the regulator that the lines can be operated safely before the order will be rescinded.

“Protection of public safety and the environment are the AER’s top priority,” said Jim Ellis, President and CEO, in a release.

“Given that this company has already had a pipeline failure at this site, the AER will not lift this suspension until Nexen can demonstrate that they can be operated safely and within all regulatory requirements. We will accept no less than concrete evidence.”

The order comes after an investigation August 25 into the failure of a pipeline at the Long Lake site.
