A ceremony at the legislature marked the official end of the Progressive Conservative’s 44 years of rule in the province.

Rachel Notley was sworn in as Alberta’s 17th premier yesterday afternoon, while hundreds of people watched. She thanked the public for showing confidence in the NDP.

Eleven ministers were also sworn in. Six of the ministers, including Notley, are from Edmonton, while three are from Calgary.  Notley explained it’s where the experience was, with four incumbents in Edmonton.

There’s two ministers from north of Edmonton. Marg McCuaig-Boyd (Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley) is the new Minister of Energy. The 62-year-old has been a teacher and administrator with the Peace River School Division for more than 20 years.

Oneil Carlier of Whitecourt-Ste Anne will serve as the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. Carlier was raised on his family’s farm in Saskatchewan. He moved to Alberta in 2002 and has worked as a regional representative with the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

The new cabinet is meeting for the first time this Wednesday.
