The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have bolstered their league-leading offence by adding a high-scoring forward from the NCAA ranks.

Head Coach and General Manager Gord Thibodeau announced today that he’s acquired the rights to John Dunbar from the Calgary Canucks.

Dunbar had until now been playing his second season at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, part of the NCAA’s ECAC conference.

The forward scored 137 points in his 129-game AJHL career. His best season came in 2009-10 when he scored 28 goals and 52 assists for the Canucks, making him the eighth highest scoring player in the league that year.

The acquisition puts the Barons one player over the limit of 9 1991-born players that can be dressed on any given night.

Thibodeau said on the team website that Dunbar will report to the team on Thursday, and be in the lineup for Friday night’s game against Sherwood Park.

That will mean he won’t be available for the first game of the 2012 calendar year, tomorrow night in St. Albert.
