Oil Barons split Showcase weekend

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons remain atop the North Division after a weekend split at the AJHL’s annual Showcase in Spruce Grove.

On Friday night, the Okotoks Oilers held on for a 4-3 win over the Barons.

Okotoks scored 13 seconds apart, and while the teams matched each other goal-for-goal the rest of the way, that would prove to be the difference.

Adam Durkee, Adam Wilcox, and Mark Drohan – with this fist junior hockey goal – were the Oil Barons scorers.

On Saturday, the Barons pulled out a thrilling 3-2 win over the Calgary Canucks.

Tied 2-2 late in the third, Jackson McKinstry scored with just 33 seconds left to give the Barons the win.

Adam Durkee and Mitch Vanderlaan had goals for the Barons, while former Baron Hayden Dawes picked up a point for Calgary.

Up next for the Barons, they head back to Spruce Grove this weekend for a date with the Saints on Friday, then travel to Whitecourt for Saturday.

The Barons will then host the Lloydminster Bobcats a week Tuesday, with puck drop at 7:30.

Oil Barons associate governor Andrew Boutlier has been named Director of Hockey Operations for Team Canada West for this year’s World Junior A Challenge.

The tournament features U-20 Junior A all-star teams from Eastern and Western Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, and the US.

Boutlier has long been involved with the Barons, and has served as an assistant coach, team president, and helped organize the 2000 RBC Cup and Northern Classic outdoor game.

This year’s World Junior A Challenge will happen in Kindersley, Saskatchewan from December 14 to 18.
