Oil sands emissions to rise 226% over 15 yrs

Suncor, oilsands project

New figures show Canada is halfway to its greenhouse gas emission goals.

But those emissions will rise until the 2020 deadline unless more action is taken.

The government numbers show oil sands emissions will go up 226 percent between 05 and 2020, and account for almost a fifth of the country’s emissions if the targets are met.

The Globe and Mail reports that Ottawa is drafting new industry rules to put limits on emissions from a barrel of oil, but not the overall industry emissions, meaning the oil sands could still double production.
