Oil sands pollution could break new limits

Industry estimates show the oilsands will soon pollute the air more than they’re supposed to be allowed to.

Regulatory documents for Shell’s proposed Jackpine mine expansion say two major gases that cause acid rain will exceed the annual emission limits.

The limits on sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were part of the new environmental framework that came into force this month.

Environment minister Diana McQueen had previously said those limits would be legally enforceable.
