Oil sheen spreads to Fort Chipewyan shores; residents report dead fish

The oily sheen on the Athabasca River appears to be spreading to shores in Fort Chipewyan and there are reports of dead fish.

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation says the skim is 100 kilometres long.

The provincial government says no energy companies have reported any sort of spill, leak or release and it suggests it could be from natural bitumen deposits.

The issue was brought to attention Sunday, and as a precaution that’s when the city shut down Fort Chips water intake.
