A pipeline company says up to 3,000 barrels of crude oil have spilled into a tributary of the Red Deer River.

Plains Midstream Canada says when the spill was detected last night, it closed off its network of pipelines in the area.

The spill is located about 100 kilometres upriver from the City of Red Deer.
