Oilsands Banquet paying tribute to Wood Buffalo's aviation history

The annual Oilsands Banquet will celebrate 85 years of aviation.

The October 16 event at the Sawridge Inn will focus on how flying played a role in the development of Wood Buffalo.

“From the early days of Punch Dickens delivering mail in the late 1920s to Wop May starting Commercial Airlines, from the growth of air service over the decades to the recent opening of the Fort McMurray International Airport, the role of aviation in enabling this region to prosper and grow into the economic engine of Canada is truly something to celebrate,” said Westbrier President Phil Enarson, in a news release.

The banquet features addresses from Mayor Melissa Blake, Airport CEO Scott Clements and President and CEO of Westjet Gregg Saretsky.

Organizers will honour the airport authority at the event. Previous honourees includes Keyano College and Oilsands Discovery Centre
