Oilsands lawsuit dismissed in U.S. court

Two environmental groups have failed in their attempt to stop the U.S. defence department from supporting the oil sands.

The Sierra Club and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy had sued the department for violating U.S. energy law.

The law says that agencies can’t buy fuel that has higher greenhouse gas emissions than conventional petroleum.

But a district judge ruled the groups didn’t have the standing to bring the lawsuit, because the defence contracts didn’t harm them or their interests.
