It was one year ago today that the provincial government unveiled the grand solution for land prices in Fort McMurray.
The Urban Development Sub-Region was announced on August 29, 2011; it was described as giving the municipality enough land for 200 thousand people.
It was supposed to stabilize the housing market and reduce the price disparity for houses in the region compared to the rest of the province.
At the time, the municipality said it would be finalized in 30-60 days.
That was then changed to the start of 2012.
Now, one year later, there’s no final timeline for the UDSR to be done.
In March, then-Infrastructure minister Jeff Johnson reiterated the province’s support for the plan in a pre-election land announcement, but said it could even take another 12 months to finish.
The province says the Infrastructure department is no longer handling the issue; it’s been transferred to Alberta Energy.
