Only one gunman in Parliament Hill shooting: police

No other suspects are being sought after a soldier was killed at the National War Memorial, and shots rang out on Parliament Hill. Ottawa police believe there was only one gunman in yesterday’s shootings.

Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while standing guard at the memorial. The gunman then raced to Parliament Hill but was targeted and killed by police and security in a gunfight in the halls of Centre Block.

MPs were nearby, sitting for their weekly caucus meeting. An Executive Assistant for Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP David Yurdiga reassured the public yesterday that the local politician and all his staff members were safely evacuated. His Fort McMurray office closed for the day after the incident.

Michael Zehaf Bibeau was identified as the shooter. He was born in 1982 and is known to police in Montreal and Vancouver.

The lockdown was lifted but Parliament Hill is still closed off to visitors and most staff. The Speaker of the House of Commons confirmed Parliament will sit today.  He also announced a full investigation into House of Commons security.
