Over $12,000 raised for the Wood Bank through CFL games

Due to government cuts in funding, the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association is unable to run their successful Basic Shelf Program this year. The program graduates more than 50 students per year, taking them from low-income situations and molding them into active contributors in Wood Buffalo. Photo supplied by the Food Bank.

The Northern Kickoff helped kick hunger in Wood Buffalo. Through the Kick Hunger and Purolator Tackle Hunger campaigns $12,000 was raised in support of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank.

The Kick Hunger campaign was a partnership between the Food Bank, the Regional Recreation Corporation, and Building Trades of Alberta. Fans who attended the games were able to donate cash or non-perishable food items leading up to Northern Kickoff game day on Jun. 13. Those efforts raised over $9,000 in cash and over 8,000 pounds of food.

Purolator Tackle Hunger, a partnership between the CFL and the company also asked fans to donate cash, it raised over $3,000.

“Being able to tap into the partnership that the CFL has with food banks in all major cities is an incredible opportunity for our organization and assists us in raising much needed food and funds,” said Arianna Johnson, Executive Director of the WBFB. “But more importantly raises awareness within our community and country about the issue of food security.”

Ristorante Cosa Nostra also donated $2,100 to the Food Bank. It auctioned off ten VIP tickets to the Northern Kickoff II.
