Pembina Institute supports AER emissions crack down

The Pembina Institute is applauding the Alberta Energy Regulator’s decision to tighten rules to reduce possible harmful effects of industry’s gas emissions.

In June, new guidelines will apply to practices such as flaring, venting, and burning off gas.

AER says by mid-August, bitumen and heavy oil operations must capture produced gas .

The regulator’s also accepted most recommendations that came last month in a report after Peace River residents complained of gassy smells coming from Baytex Energy’s operations.

Baytex is one of four companies in that area that heats bitumen in above-ground tanks to extract oil.
