Penhorwood inspection gives look inside condemned buildings

The municipality is looking for a contractor to demolish the condemned Penhorwood buildings.

A safety review report describes what it looks like inside the seven buildings, which were evacuated in the middle of the night in 2011 because of structural concerns.

It describes units with mould and water damage, and identifies hazmat material such as thermostats, fire and smoke alarms and CFL bulbs. The report recommends careful removal of the material before demolition, with only two people in a building at a time with supervision by a firefighter or similar personnel.

The RMWB put out a request for tender to tear down the buildings. Bids close at 2 p.m. today. A municipal Safety Codes Officer issued an order dated September 8, 2014, requiring the demolition of the buildings.

Tenants are still paying paying mortgages and legal fees for a $60 million lawsuit that includes the RMWB and developer as defendants. The order is being served to the Condominium Corporation and its owners.
