Phoenix to end 24-hour medevac services

Phoenix Heli-Flight says it will be ending its 24-hour medical evacuation flights at the end of May due to a lack of funding.

President Paul Spring says they haven’t been able to get funding commitments from government or from oil companies other than a couple that have made commitments.

Suncor and Cenovus each pledged 10% of the budget required to run the service, but government and the rest of the industry never followed up on promises Spring says were made before the helicopter launched.

The 24 hour helicopter service was launched early last year when Phoenix paid $6.5 million for a Eurocopter EC135.

At the time, the company said it would be up to the government and industry to ensure the service was funded.

Phoenix has spent more than a decade consulting and making proposals to Alberta Health, which has consistently refused to help fund the service.
