Police putting the focus on seatbelts

Police are trying to get the word out on seatbelt safety this month.

It’s a timely focus, as earlier this week a driver died after his vehicle left the road, and he was found not to have been wearing a seatbelt.

Corporal George Cameron says it can make a huge difference.

“A reminder to everyone out there to ensure that they have their seatbelt on and on correctly. If you’re in a crash and you have your seatbelt on correctly, chances of surviving that crash increase by 50%,” he said.

“Almost 40% of the occupants that were killed in a collison were not buckled up, and that’s according to a study done by Transport Canada.”

Cameron says investigators found evidence the victim in Monday’s fatal crash off Highway 63 wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

“He wasn’t ejected from the vehicle at all, so he was inside the vehicle and obviously thrown around,” he said.

Police say the crash could have been caused by distracted driving or fatigue.

The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is 115 dollars.
