Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down

It hasn’t happened in about 600 years – Pope Benedict the 16th has decided to leave the papacy.

He made the surprise announcement in Latin this morning during a meeting with Vatican cardinals.

He is 85 years old, and said that he made the decision because both strength of mind and body are needed to the job.

The pontiff goes on to say his strength in the few months has deteriorated to the point where he feels he can’t properly fulfill the job.

The traditional mourning time that would follow the death of a pope doesn’t have to be observed, as he is just stepping down.

The conclave should have a new pope elected by the end of next month.
