Suncor says there was a power loss just after 5 PM at its oil sands and Firebag facilities; the cause is unknown.
It says there will be increased flaring as it responds to the incident; hence reports of flames and black smoke in the area.
Employees and contractors in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution, but there are no injuries, and all people on site are accounted for.
