Premiers agree on a National Energy Strategy

Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders have come to an agreement on a new national energy strategy.

After two days of meetings in St.John’s, Newfoundland the group came together to create a framework around the energy industry in Canada.

Some details include recognizing Alberta and other provinces as the “constitutional owners and managers” of Canada’s natural resources.

“This document is an important meeting of the minds across Canada about the importance of Canada’s energy industry, including its national infrastructure,” stated Premier Rachel Notley in a press release. “At the same time, this strategy speaks directly to our province’s new determination to develop our energy economy while making progress to address climate change – a priority Albertans share with Canadians across the country.”

The strategy promotes both project development and the need to act on climate change. It will put a focus on opening and developing new markets as well as a push to invest in new innovation and technology.

“The consensus reached today on what we’re seeking to achieve is the first step towards making real progress,” stated Notley in a release.

More than 280,000 Canadians are directly employed in the energy industry.
