Prentice officially enters PC leadership race

Jim Prentice has officially kicked off his Alberta PC leadership campaign today, with announcements in Edmonton and Calgary.

He says he thinks the trust between the province’s voters and its government has been broken and needs fixing.

“The bond of trust between the people of Alberta and their elected representatives must be repaired. I will introduce clear rules, I will change the way that things are done, and I promise you that those rules will be enforced with discipline,” he said.

He says he’s taking a stance on a key issue that former Premier Allison Redford was criticized for.

“We will put an end to sole source contracts. And when it comes to public appointments, I promise you that qualifications will matter, and connections will not,” he said.

He also addressed finances, saying when it comes to spending and saving, Alberta needs to get back to the basics.

“Fiscal prudence is the foundation of good government, and ladies and gentlemen, it will be the cornerstone of my government.”

Redford resigned in March after controversy surfaced about her high costs of travel, and plans to build a publicly funded penthouse on top of a government building.

Prentice and Ric McIver are the only two candidates for the leadership, that the PC Party will vote on in September.
