The industrial development effects on the environment could soon have a arms-length watchdog agency to monitor it.
The idea was proposed by a government-appointed panel, as the province tries to rehabilitate environmental monitoring, especially in the oil sands.
It would report to the environment minister and be responsible for compiling its own research and reports.
It would be funded through tax revenues and industry levies.
