Province releases long awaited pipeline safety report

The results of an independent study on pipeline safety have been released by the province.

The study says Alberta’s network of oil and natural gas pipelines is strong, and compares with other places around the world.

But it also included 17 reccommendations that included increased safety of pipelines that cross water, and better ways of responding to oil spills.

The province commissioned the report last summer after multiple oil spills, that included a 475,000-litre leak from a Plains Midstream Canada pipeline in Central Alberta last spring.

Opposition politicians and other critics have put pressure on Alberta Energy Minister Ken Hughes to make the results of the study public.

A Calgary engineering firm finished the report last fall.
