Local public schools are keeping more of their staff than ever before.

The public school district says it retained more staff this year than it had in the previous 40 years since it started keeping track.

It made fewer than 40 new hires this year – which means about a 9 percent turnover rate.

That’s down from more than 70 hires for the last school year, and an overall average of a 30 percent turnover rate each year.

District officials say high wages, subsidized housing for first-year teachers, and better community amenities are helping keep teachers in Fort McMurray.
